Online and Zoom Interviews
Zoom has exploded into popularity over the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 1.7m daily users in the UK in 2020.
All media companies now use the app regularly for almost all internal meetings, web conferences, and, most crucially, remote online job interviews – the ‘new normal’.
This is a game changer.
The increased flexibility and opportunity that online interviews provide for you and every other job candidate means the competition is harder then ever.
But don’t worry, we’re here to help you succeed!
Here are our Top 5 Zoom Interview Tips to ensure you get the job:
1. Research and Preparation.
First and foremost, make sure you learn about both the role and the company before you have the interview.
Nothing is more impressive than being up-to-date on their current content and works.
It shows you’re interested, knowledgeable, and it shows that you actually want to work for them.
2. Get Familiar With Zoom.
Make sure you know what you’re doing.
There’s nothing worse than not being able to get your webcam working on the day of the interview, or muting yourself by mistake!
Getting familiar with the app shouldn’t take you too long, but it will save you a lot of headache should something tech-related go wrong during the interviews.
3. Use your (Post-It) notes.
Whilst memorising what you’re going to rambling about might work for some, online interviews now provide you with a neat little trick.
A useful technique is to place Post-It notes with key answers and experiences stuck to the wall you are facing (think of it as a little cheat sheet).
This allows you to read what’s behind your laptop, state a clear and informative answer, and not fumble around whilst staring at screen and the interviewer.
Just make sure you write down answers to questions and topics you know will come up. The key here is to note down useful information, not useless – quality always over quantity.
4. Try not to be repetitive…
Whilst you might be really, really, really, skilled at content writing, it’s important to add some variety to your interview.
Having a list of your works and topics memorised (or on a Post It!) allows you to discuss all the experiences and skills you have acquired during time within the media industry. This will differentiate you from the rest!
5. Confidence is key
Confidence is always going to be a major factor – whether you land the job or not – so it’s important that you try your best to appear confident.
How do you do that? Well first, dress for success!
That means no tank tops and sports bras please people… Dressing well is the first sign that you’re confident in yourself and that you mean business!
Then, it’s important to practice what you are going to say, and how you are going to say it. This will allow you speak confidently, clearly and concisely and tell the interviewer why they ought to hire you!
